NASA Reveals Plans: What Will the Future Astronaut Base on the Moon Look Like?

NASA has unveiled detailed plans for establishing a permanent lunar base, divided into three phases through 2032 and beyond. The first astronauts will land on the Moon as part of the Artemis 4 mission in 2028. The plans include rovers and hopping drones for astronaut mobility.

NASA unveiled detailed plans this week for building a future permanent base on the Moon, dividing the project into three phases: the first lasting until 2029, the second from 2029–2032, and the third starting from 2032 onwards. Details of the first phase are currently available to the public.

Artemis 4 and the First Landing Opportunities

The most concrete plans concern the crewed Artemis 4 mission, scheduled for launch in 2028. This mission is expected to bring astronauts to the lunar surface for the first time since the Apollo era. NASA also showcased rovers that astronauts will use to move across the Moon's surface, as well as hopping drones that will monitor the team's activities from above.

Three-Phase Development Plan

The construction of the permanent base will proceed in stages. In the first phase, base infrastructure will be established and initial habitation solutions tested. In the second phase, from 2029–2032, capacity will be expanded and the team's capabilities increased. The third phase will involve long-term scientific and operational activities on the Moon.

Several weeks ago, astronauts from the Artemis 2 mission returned to Earth after completing the first crewed lunar flyby in nearly 50 years. This flight did not include a lunar landing but confirmed the US commitment to restoring human presence near the Moon. NASA emphasizes that building the base represents a common step forward for all humanity in the history of space exploration.
