National Library gets an indoor street: public space as alternative to shopping centers

National Library interior architect Ville Lausmäe presented the concept for the renovated building, which will feature a year-round indoor street. The library will reopen in approximately one year and is intended to offer an alternative to shopping centers as public gathering spaces.

Tallinn's National Library will return to the public with a fresh look – the renovated building will feature a year-round indoor street that should transform the library into a genuine public space. This was discussed by interior architect Ville Lausmäe at an interior design conference held on Thursday.

According to Lausmäe, the indoor street concept aims to create a place where people can simply be – without any consumption obligation, which is characteristic of shopping centers. The lack of such a public space is acutely felt in urban life, especially during winter months, when spending time outdoors is uncomfortable.

The National Library will reopen to visitors in approximately one year. During the renovation, the building's interior will be redesigned so that it functions not only as a knowledge lending facility, but also as a living meeting place for all Tallinn residents and visitors.
