Nobel laureate Kazuo Ishiguro returns with 1930s spy thriller

British publisher Faber announced that Nobel Prize in Literature laureate Kazuo Ishiguro's new novel "Miss Lambert Steps Aboard Danger" will be published in March 2027. The story is set in 1938 and follows the protagonist, who becomes entangled in spy adventures on the trail of a mysterious woman both at a hotel in Devon and on a train heading to Scotland. This is the writer's ninth novel, the first since "Klara and the Sun" published in 2021.

Culture

The Japan-born writer who relocated to Britain early in life, Kazuo Ishiguro, is ready with a new novel titled "Miss Lambert Steps Aboard Danger". According to British publisher Faber, the book will reach bookshop shelves in March 2027.

Spy adventure on a train and in a hotel

The novel is set in 1938 and follows the protagonist Richard Hadley, who meets the mysterious Miss Lambert. The curious man follows the woman to a conference at a hotel in Devon and subsequently on a train heading to Scotland, where he also encounters an old schoolmate and a former Conservative Party minister.

Faber publishing director Angus Cargill described the work as "a delightful and refreshing addition to Ishiguro's oeuvre, drawing inspiration from his love of music, art, and classic cinema".

Ishiguro's substantial body of work

"Miss Lambert Steps Aboard Danger" is Ishiguro's ninth novel. Following his previous work "Klara and the Sun", published in 2021, the writer has since released only a collection of lyrics, "The Summer We Crossed Europe in the Rain", which he wrote for American jazz singer Stacey Kent. In the US, the new novel will be published by Alfred A. Knopf (Penguin).

Ishiguro is more widely known as the author of the novels "Never Let Me Go" and "The Remains of the Day", the latter of which won the 1989 Booker Prize. In 2017, he received the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Coming to the screen soon

Fans have reason to look forward to the autumn as well, as October will see the premiere of the film adaptation of "Klara and the Sun" starring Jenna Ortega and Amy Adams. Ishiguro's works have been brought to the screen before: in 2025, "A Pale View of Hills", based on his debut novel, reached cinemas, and earlier adaptations include "Never Let Me Go" (2010) and the cult film "The Remains of the Day" (1993).
