Norway's PM: Russia's war in Ukraine has left deep scars
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre writes that Russia's illegal war against Ukraine has fundamentally altered Norway's relations with Russia. However, the geographical proximity of the two countries demands a balanced approach that ensures stability in the Arctic.
PoliticsNorwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre has published an opinion article addressing the impact of Russia's illegal war on Norway-Russia relations. According to Støre, the aggression against Ukraine has created deep wounds that have significantly altered the dynamics between the two countries.
Despite the tensions, Norway's prime minister emphasises that the countries are linked by geography. Norway and Russia share a common border and are neighbours in the Arctic. This means Oslo cannot shape its Russia policy based solely on confrontational logic.
Støre stresses the need for a Russia policy that balances competing considerations: supporting Ukraine and principally condemning violations of international law, while also preventing destabilisation of the Arctic region. Stability and predictability in the High North are of strategic vital importance to Norway.
Norway has been among Ukraine's strongest supporters in Europe, allocating significant sums for both military and humanitarian aid. At the same time, Oslo maintains pragmatic communication with Moscow on matters concerning the Arctic environment, fisheries, and border management.
