The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has announced the discovery of dozens of previously undeclared chemical weapons in Syria, according to the watchdog's monthly activity report released on Tuesday.

The OPCW, which oversees global compliance with the Chemical Weapons Convention, did not specify the exact types or locations of the weapons found. However, the discovery raises serious concerns about Syria's compliance with its obligations to fully declare and destroy its chemical weapons stockpiles.

Syria joined the Chemical Weapons Convention in 2013 following international pressure after a large-scale chemical attack in the Damascus suburb of Ghouta that killed hundreds of civilians. Despite formally committing to disarmament, Syria has repeatedly faced accusations of concealing parts of its chemical arsenal and continuing to use chemical agents against civilian populations during its prolonged civil conflict.

The OPCW has conducted numerous investigations into alleged chemical weapons use in Syria over the past decade, attributing several attacks to Syrian government forces. The latest findings suggest that the process of accounting for Syria's full chemical weapons inventory remains incomplete.
