Plastic Surgeon: Barbie Faces and Perfect Bodies Are a Thing of the Past, the Trend Is Authenticity
Reconstructive surgeon Dr. Isabella-Gabriela Heido-Vendik explains that plastic surgery no longer means extreme cosmetic procedures or filtered ideals. The new trend is moving towards authenticity and emphasizing each woman's individuality. According to the doctor, her goal is to help women feel at home in their own bodies again.
OpinionFor many people, plastic surgery is associated primarily with extreme cosmetic procedures and social media filter-enhanced body ideals. Reconstructive surgeon Dr. Isabella-Gabriela Heido-Vendik is convinced, however, that this perception is outdated.
According to Heido-Vendik, contemporary plastic surgery is a combination of mathematical precision, creativity, and a deeply human desire to support patients on their path to self-confidence. "My work is not to turn someone into another person; it is to help a woman feel at home in her own body again," the doctor has said.
Barbie Faces No Longer Sell
A decade ago, the so-called Barbie aesthetic dominated the beauty industry: round cheeks, a perfectly symmetrical face, plump lips, and sharp jawlines. Today, the situation has changed. Patient desires have become far more personal; people come in not to look like someone else, but to feel better as themselves.
According to Heido-Vendik, social media development plays an important role in this shift. Although platforms continue to spread edited images, a counter-movement is growing: more and more influencers and ordinary people are promoting authenticity and naturalness. This is directly reflected in the wish lists that reach plastic surgeons' consultation rooms.
Reconstruction Versus Aesthetics
Reconstructive surgery differs significantly from aesthetic surgery. While an aesthetic procedure is often the patient's own desire to alter their appearance, reconstructive surgery is primarily aimed at treating congenital deformities, injuries, or diseases-such as post-breast cancer surgery recovery. For Heido-Vendik, it is precisely this field that is close to her heart: helping a person restore physical wholeness after a difficult life stage, and with it psychological balance as well.
