President Alar Karis signs 19 laws, including Estonian-language mandate

President Alar Karis approved 19 laws on Monday, covering a range of areas including a requirement for Estonian-language administration across all public sector institutions, mandatory notification for drivers about mobile speed camera use, and updated rules for the organisation of the Prosecutor's Office.

Estonia

Alar Karis, the President of Estonia, signed 19 new laws on Monday, June 29, 2026, marking a significant legislative step for the country across several key policy areas.

Among the most notable provisions is a requirement that all public sector service-providing institutions conduct their affairs in Estonian. The move reinforces the status of Estonian as the country's official administrative language and extends that obligation broadly across the public sector.

A second measure addresses road safety and transparency: motorists must now be notified when mobile automatic traffic surveillance systems are being used for speed measurement. This aims to ensure drivers are aware of monitoring activity involving portable speed cameras, rather than encountering them without forewarning.

The package of laws also includes an update to the internal working arrangements of the Prosecutor's Office, modernising how the institution is organised and operated.
