Price gaps at Estonian grocery stores have narrowed sharply

Postimees' shopping basket comparison shows that by early June, prices at Estonia's largest grocery stores have converged. The price difference between the cheapest and most expensive baskets has fallen by over a third, and all baskets now remain below 40 euros.

Prices at Estonian grocery stores have surprisingly become more uniform by early June. The latest results of Postimees' regular shopping basket comparison show that price differences between major retail chains have decreased noticeably.

At the end of May, there was a clear gap between the cheapest and most expensive shopping baskets, but now this difference has tightened by more than a third. Importantly, all compared shopping baskets now fit below the 40-euro threshold, which gives consumers somewhat more choice without significant financial sacrifice.

The narrowing of price differences between grocery stores may suggest that retailers have begun to respond to each other's pricing policies more quickly than before. Competition in Estonia's food goods market remains constantly intense, and smaller differences between stores mean that for shoppers, the choice of store no longer carries the same financial weight as it did previously.
