A rare encounter took place in an Estonian forest on 30 May when nature enthusiast Erika Kruup spotted two brown bears through a wildlife camera. The pair's distinctive feature was that one of the bears—the larger male—was missing its left front leg.

Despite the obvious injury, the male bear moved forward with determination and resolve. At his side remained a loyal companion, who appeared to be accompanying the forest dweller with natural instinct. The movement of the two animals was steady and calm, suggesting the bear had adapted to its disability.

Such a sight is extremely rare in Estonian wildlife. Brown bears are generally difficult for human eyes to spot, and capturing an injured individual together with a companion is exceptional luck among nature observers. The photographs taken by Erika Kruup provide a unique glimpse into the hardships of forest life and the capacity for adaptation.
