Reinsalu on Isamaa presidential election: Finding a candidate won't be easy
Isamaa chairman Urmas Reinsalu stressed on Monday ahead of the party's discussion on the presidential election that the Republic's president must not be merely a ceremonial figurehead reached as a minimum common denominator compromise between parties. Finding a suitable presidential candidate is, in his view, a challenging task.
PoliticsUrmas Reinsalu said on Monday, 29 June 2026, ahead of Isamaa's discussion on the presidential election, that the party has high expectations for a candidate and the president must not be merely a symbolic figurehead.
According to Reinsalu, the Republic's president cannot limit himself to a role where he becomes an inter-party compromise and represents only a minimal common denominator. Isamaa wants a president who would fulfil his role substantively and demonstrate clear state leadership capability.
The party chairman acknowledged, however, that finding a suitable candidate will not be easy and the upcoming discussions are important for Isamaa to develop its position thoroughly.
