Riina Solman: Government with 12% support deems recognition of two sexes a security threat

Tallinn Deputy Mayor and ISAMAA Vice Chair Riina Solman sharply criticizes the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications' decision to commission a study worth up to €100,000 to examine the impact of so-called gender-critical rhetoric on security. According to Solman, this is an absurd situation where a government with only 12% public support considers the existence of biological two sexes to be a threat to public security.

Opinion

Tallinn Deputy Mayor and ISAMAA Vice Chair Riina Solman raises a pointed question: does the Estonian government really consider the existence of two sexes to be a security threat?

The ministry behind the study

The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications, led by Erkki Keldo, has announced a study worth up to €100,000. The study aims to clarify the impact of so-called gender-critical rhetoric on public security and safety. According to Solman, in practice this means that people who believe in the existence of biological men and women could be labelled a security threat based on the study's findings.

Criticism of a government with only 12% support

Solman emphasizes that this is a government whose public support has fallen to just 12 percent. Against this backdrop, she finds it cynical that such a government decides to spend taxpayers' money on a study that essentially targets a large portion of Estonia's population. "This is not satire," writes Solman, pointing out that the situation is so absurd it could be taken as a joke, but unfortunately it is reality.

In the Deputy Mayor's view, this is yet another example of how the current Reform Party-led government has lost touch with ordinary people's concerns and is dealing with issues that alienate rather than unite most Estonians.
