The question of Romania and Moldova unification has long been on the agenda, with a portion of society in both countries supporting unification, though the political process has so far moved slowly. Romania has been an EU member since 2007, Moldova gained EU candidate status in 2022 and has been actively conducting EU accession negotiations. The unification question thus also takes on broader geopolitical significance, particularly given Moldova's location in the vicinity of the Ukraine war.
