Russia-Belarus Military Cooperation Deepens, Ukraine Expresses Concern
Deepening military cooperation between Russia and Belarus is causing growing anxiety in Ukraine and among its allies. There are concerns that Moscow may use Belarusian territory as a launching point for future attacks against Ukraine.
PoliticsMilitary cooperation between Russia and Belarus has become significantly tighter in recent months, raising serious concern both in Ukraine and among its Western allies. There are fears that Moscow is planning to use Belarusian territory to organize future attacks against Ukraine.
Belarus has long provided Russia with territory of strategic importance—in February 2022, Russia launched its full-scale invasion partly from Belarusian soil, advancing toward Kyiv. Although that offensive was repelled, the military ties between the two countries have become even more entrenched.
Ukraine and Western nations are watching the situation with alarm, as the alignment between the Minsk-Moscow axis creates a potentially dangerous scenario where attacks could be coordinated from multiple directions simultaneously. This would force Ukraine's defense forces to spread resources across a broad front.
Experts warn that Belarusian president Aljaksandr Lukašenka has become increasingly dependent on Kremlin support, and as a result, his capacity to independently decide on Russian military use of his territory has diminished significantly. Belarusian military bases and infrastructure are becoming increasingly accessible to Russian forces.
NATO member states, including Estonia, are closely monitoring developments, as Belarus borders directly with Poland and Lithuania—both alliance members. The further evolution of the situation will directly affect the security of the entire Baltic region.
