EstoniaTen-year-old Sebastian Veiman, whose rare genetic disorder required treatment funded by a record €2.5 million raised last autumn, has had a successful year, having completed both gene therapy and third grade.
Sebastian's mother, Maile-Triin Nõlvak, shared a heartfelt account at the end of the school year about what the family has endured. The school year was not easy, the boy had to study both in hospital wards and in Dubai, where the family spent an extended period for treatment. Part of his studies took place even amid a war situation, which made an already difficult situation even harder.
Last autumn, Sebastian's story captured the hearts of all Estonia. The family launched a fundraising campaign to cover the cost of gene therapy, and Estonian people responded to the appeal with exceptional speed, raising the necessary sum in record time. This wave of solidarity showed how willing Estonian people are to support one another in critical moments.
Now, several months later, both the treatment and the school year have been successfully completed. According to his mother, the journey has been difficult, but full of victories that make all the hardships worthwhile. The family is grateful to everyone who provided support along Sebastian's path.
