Serena Williams draws favourable Wimbledon draw, Djokovic could face Tsitsipas in second round
Serena Williams returns to Wimbledon's main draw for a Grand Slam singles tournament after a nearly four-year break, facing Australian Maya Joint in the first round. In the men's draw, seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic could meet Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second round. The tournament runs from 29 June to 12 July.
SportSerena Williams' unexpected comeback has dominated attention in the Wimbledon main draw seedings, which also presents a favourable draw for her. The 43-year-old American, who has won Wimbledon a record seven times, faces world number 53 Maya Joint from Australia in the first round.
Williams returns after four-year break
Williams steps onto a Grand Slam singles court for the first time since the 2022 US Open, a break of nearly four years. Organisers granted her a wild card for tournament participation, and the draw has been kind to her: the 20-year-old Joint has yet to win a match at Wimbledon and has won only one of her last 14 matches.
In the women's draw, defending champion Iga Swiatek begins her title defence against American Taylor Townsend. World number one Aryna Sabalenka faces Serbian Teodora Kostovic in the first round, while British number one Emma Raducanu plays Croatian Antonia Ruzic. If both progress, Sabalenka and Raducanu could meet as early as the third round.
Djokovic and Tsitsipas could collide early
In the men's tournament, seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic begins with a first-round match against Chinese player Wu Yibing. However, the draw has set up a potential second-round meeting with Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, provided both advance from their first-round matches.
Defending champion Jannik Sinner faces Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic in the first round. The Italian has not competed since a surprise second-round loss at this year's French Open. The biggest absentee is Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, who continues his recovery from a wrist injury and will miss the tournament.
Wimbledon's main draw runs from 29 June to 12 July, with first-round matches taking place on 29 and 30 June.
