Sony to End PlayStation Game Disc Production from 2028
Sony has announced that from January 2028, it will cease production of physical discs for all new PlayStation games. Going forward, games can only be purchased digitally through the PlayStation Store or from retailers in the form of activation codes. The decision affects both Sony's own games and third-party titles.
TechnologySony has announced that from January 2028, no new PlayStation console games will be produced on physical discs. The change affects both Sony's own games and titles from all other publishers, leaving customers with the option to purchase games only digitally through the PlayStation Store or from retailers as activation codes.
The company stressed in a press statement that games released or already available before 2028 will remain available in disc format, so purchases and collections in the coming years are not at risk.
Reason: Digital Shift
Sony explained the decision through changing consumer habits. According to the company, the entire entertainment industry is continuously shifting from physical media to digital platforms, and Sony is following this trend.
At the same time, Sony also announced the closure of the PlayStation Store for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita consoles. In most countries, including all European nations, the store will close in July 2027. After that, owners of these consoles will no longer be able to purchase new games, but downloading previously purchased games will remain possible.
Industry Direction
Gaming console manufacturers are increasingly moving away from physical media. Currently, both Sony and Microsoft offer two console models on the market-one with a disc drive and one without. According to market commentators, both companies may completely abandon optical drive models with their next generation of consoles.
