Swedish metal band Sabaton, who performed in Russian-occupied Crimea, returns to Tallinn concert

Swedish metal band Sabaton, who have previously performed in Russian-occupied Crimea, will return to Tallinn next spring for a concert organised by Live Nation Estonia. This fact has raised questions about the band's ethical choices.

Culture

Swedish metal band Sabaton plans to hold a concert in Tallinn next spring, organised by Live Nation Estonia (LNE). The band has performed in Estonia repeatedly and last visited three years ago, also at Live Nation Estonia's invitation.

Crimea concert casts shadow on reputation

Less well known, however, is the fact that Sabaton has also performed with a concert in Russian-occupied Crimea. This fact raises the question of whether concert organisers and audiences operating in Estonia consider such background information important and whether it is taken into account when selecting performers.

Performances in occupied territories have resulted in sharp criticism of several Western artists, as this can be interpreted as tacit support for Russian aggression. In the Estonian context, where the topic of the war in Ukraine is particularly sensitive, inviting such a band may feel contradictory to local audiences.

Live Nation Estonia has not commented

Live Nation Estonia has not publicly commented on whether Sabaton's earlier Crimea performance played any role in its decision-making. The concert is advertised for next spring and ticket sales are presumably underway. Whether the public will take this information into account when making a purchase decision remains up to each individual.
