Tartu Anne Canal Beach Closed Just Five Days After Opening

Tartu Anne Canal Beach was set to open for the swimming season with a green flag, but as of Friday it has been flying a red flag instead. One of two water samples taken the previous week failed to meet safety standards. Green algae blooms, which have covered the beach since the start of the season, have persisted throughout.

Tartu Anne Canal Beach closed to swimmers just five days after the start of the swimming season. As of Friday, a red flag now flies from the mast, indicating a swimming ban. Two water samples were taken from the beach the previous week, and one failed to meet established safety standards.

At the beginning of the season, the beach was covered with green algae that drifted lazily on the water's surface. However, these algae do not prohibit swimming in themselves; they can be pushed aside or waded through. According to the water tests at that time, the water was clean and a green flag flew from the mast.

The situation has now changed. A red flag means the water quality does not meet the standards required for safe swimming, and bathing at the beach is not recommended. For residents and visitors, it means finding alternative entertainment at Anne Canal in the near future.
