US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that American military forces launched strikes in self-defence against Iranian reconnaissance assets, communications systems, and air defence installations across the country.

The US Justifies the Strikes

According to CENTCOM, the targeted Iranian facilities posed a threat to both American forces and international shipping. US military officials characterised the strikes as a response to Iran's "unprovoked and continued aggression".

Trump's Threat and Hormuz

Donald Trump threatened to "bomb Iran into oblivion" if the country does not sign a peace agreement. At the same time, Tehran announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, blocking one of the world's strategically critical sea lanes through which a significant share of global oil passes.

Escalating Conflict

The situation in the Persian Gulf has rapidly escalated. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz could seriously disrupt global energy markets and international shipping. Tensions between the two nations represent one of the greatest threats to regional stability in recent decades.
