Thunderstorms and hail hit Estonia today: nationwide weather alert issued
A low-pressure system moving from the west over Estonia brings unstable weather with risk of thunderstorms and heavy showers. Temperatures will rise to 22-26 degrees Celsius during the day, but there is a risk of strong wind gusts, heavy rain, and hail. The Environment Agency has issued a first-level weather alert for the entire country.
EstoniaOn Saturday, 21 June, a low-pressure system moves from west to east over Estonia, making summer weather unstable and bringing the risk of thunderstorms and heavy showers. Despite several unpleasant surprises, daytime air temperature will remain pleasantly warm for summer.
Temperature up to 28 degrees
In most of Estonia, temperature will rise to 22-26 degrees Celsius during the day. In Eastern and Southern Estonia, readings may reach up to 28 degrees in places, while on the coast warmth may remain around only 18 degrees. Southwesterly and southerly winds will blow at 4-10 metres per second, but from the islands onwards the wind will turn to westerly and northwesterly directions.
Why will the weather deteriorate?
According to meteorologists, there is currently very warm and humid air over Estonia. Cooler air approaching from the west creates favourable conditions for thundercloud formation. During the day and evening, heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected in many places. During thunderstorms, wind gusts may become significantly stronger than normal background winds.
Hail and heavy rain are possible
In places, thunderstorms may become severe. Meteorologists warn of heavy rain, hail up to two centimetres in diameter, and strong wind gusts that may cause minor damage and disrupt traffic.
Nationwide weather alert
Due to the increased risk of thunderstorms, the Environment Agency has issued a first-level weather alert for all of Estonia. Such an alert means that weather may be dangerous under certain conditions, and everyone is advised to monitor up-to-date weather forecasts and account for rapidly changing weather conditions.
