United Kingdom ranks 24th in Europe for 5G availability

The United Kingdom has long held a lagging position in developing Europe's 5G networks, ranking only 24th among 30 European countries in terms of 5G availability. This means that a large portion of the population and businesses continue to lack the benefits of modern mobile connectivity, which has become increasingly important in today's digital economy.

According to analysts, the solution lies primarily in more efficient network planning. If operators and regulatory authorities better coordinated infrastructure deployment and eliminated redundant investments, this could generate up to £2.58 billion in additional value for the country. This sum stems from both increased efficiency and economic opportunities offered by expanding connectivity.

Compared to leading European countries, the United Kingdom's 5G coverage remains fragmented, particularly in rural areas. In many Western European countries, 5G networks are already widely in use and support manufacturing automation, healthcare technology, and autonomous vehicles. The United Kingdom's lag in this area could, in the longer term, damage the country's competitiveness on the global stage.

Rapid progress would require cooperation between the government, local authorities, and the telecommunications industry. Infrastructure sharing and joint planning could significantly reduce coverage gaps and accelerate network construction in areas where it would have the greatest economic impact.
