US Marines can now shoot down drones cheaply off the South China Sea coast

US Marines have developed a new cost-effective method for destroying drones. Testing of fixed-wing drone destruction from combat vehicles took place off the South China Sea coast. The new solution avoids the need for missile systems that cost millions of dollars.

US Marines have demonstrated a new capability to destroy drones at significantly lower cost than traditional methods have allowed. According to The Wall Street Journal, troops off the South China Sea coast targeted an incoming fixed-wing drone from combat vehicles using a cheaper alternative system.

Until now, shooting down drones has been an expensive process, with missiles costing a million dollars or more used to neutralize a single small and inexpensive drone. This inefficiency has become an acute problem as drone attacks have become increasingly common in modern conflicts, with adversaries able to deploy hundreds of cheap drones to inflict costly defensive spending.

Development of the new approach is part of a broader effort by the US military to find cost-effective air defence solutions. The South China Sea is a geopolitically tense region where the US Marine Corps regularly trains for various scenarios, including potential conflict situations in areas connected to China. Testing of the new drone defence capability in this region underscores its strategic importance.
