Valdo Randpere: Parliamentary debate has been replaced by intimidation

Reform Party MP Valdo Randpere criticizes opposition conduct in the Riigikogu, arguing that substantive debate has been replaced by pressure and threats. He contends that a so-called "traffic light" mechanism is being used to restrict the coalition's freedom of action both before and after elections.

Reform Party Riigikogu member Valdo Randpere accuses the opposition of establishing a logic of extortion in the Estonian parliament instead of substantive debate. According to Randpere, the coalition is threatened with the dismissal of ministers, barred from making decisions before elections, and faces the prospect that all current government decisions could be reversed after the vote.

Particular attention is drawn to the so-called "traffic light," a mechanism the opposition uses to block coalition decisions. Randpere compares it to the Anttila mail-order catalogue, from which each opposition politician can select a suitable law to order and subsequently repeal.

The spread of such political culture raises the question of whether the Riigikogu can fulfill its primary function-legislation and state governance-when the opposition systematically uses parliamentary tools not for debate but for obstruction.

Randpere's criticism points to broader tensions in the Estonian political landscape, where the approach to elections brings increasingly sharp confrontations between the coalition and opposition.
