Vandals smash window of café in Elva train station building: "This is no longer an isolated incident"

A window of A la Ain Café, operating in Elva's train station building, was broken during Sunday night. The café owner Anari Ain warns that vandalism has become an alarmingly common problem in Elva and appeals to parents and the community to address the issue.

The owners of A la Ain Café, operating in Elva's train station building, received an unpleasant surprise on Sunday morning when one of the café's windows had been smashed overnight. The café owner Anari Ain reported the incident in a local Facebook group and appealed publicly to the community.

"Today a window in Elva train station building was smashed. The incident has been reported to police and we have security camera footage. The most troubling thing is that this is no longer an isolated incident. Vandalism, property destruction and damage to others' belongings have become far too common. Business owners, residents and the entire community are suffering," Ain wrote in her post.

Repeated incidents raise concerns

Ain told the newsroom that the window was smashed at approximately 1 a.m. and police visited the scene in the morning. The security camera footage is being reviewed and the suspects are the same young people who have committed acts of vandalism in the area before. Additionally, it emerged that the tenant of a food kiosk in the train station building has had windows broken twice already, and egging of the building is a daily occurrence.

"It's already difficult to run a business in a small town. Instead of focusing on my work and customers, I have to deal with broken windows, repair bills and a loss of sense of security," the owner said.

Appeal to parents and the community

Speaking as a parent herself, Ain turned directly to other parents with the question of whether they know where their children are in the evenings and what they are doing. "The responsibility does not lie only with the school, the municipality or the police. Responsibility begins at home. The question is no longer just about one window. The question is how much longer we accept this as normal," she wrote.

Ain calls on parents, the community, police and Elva municipality to take the problem seriously and hopes that the incident will eventually reach the parents of those responsible.

Historic building suffers damage

Elva train station building is protected as a cultural monument due to its significant architectural value. The neoclassical-style railway station building was constructed in 1889 and laid the foundation for the founding and development of the town of Elva.

In comments on the local Facebook group, Elva residents are actively discussing the incident. Some argue that young people have too many rights and too few responsibilities, others emphasise the role of parents, and some encourage the community to intervene if they witness wrongdoing.
