Vets warn: these popular houseplants are poisonous to cats
Houseplants have become an integral part of home design, but vets warn that many popular plants pose a serious threat to cats. In the worst case, a poisonous plant can be fatal to the animal.
CultureGreen houseplants create a cosy and nature-inspired atmosphere at home, but cat owners should be careful when choosing their plants. Vets warn that many beloved houseplants contain substances that are dangerous or even lethal to cats.
Cats are curious animals that tend to nibble on plants and try to taste them. Even a small amount of certain plant leaves or flowers can cause serious poisoning symptoms, including vomiting, seizures and organ damage.
Lilies are particularly dangerous, as they can cause kidney failure in cats from consuming just a small amount. You should also be careful with dieffenbachia, pothos and philodendron, which contain crystals that irritate the animal's mouth and digestive tract. Popular aloe vera is also poisonous to cats.
If you suspect your cat has eaten a poisonous plant, contact a vet immediately. Do not wait for symptoms to appear, as in some cases quick action can save the animal's life.
Cat owners are advised to choose plants that are safe for their pets, such as Swedish ivy, spider plant or palm fronds. Dangerous plants should be placed in locations inaccessible to cats or removed from the home entirely.
