CultureVoronja Gallery opened its 13th summer season on Lake Peipsi on 14 June 2026. This time, the focus is on a joint exhibition by local artists Tuuli Vahesaar and Martin Laiapea titled "Odd People", for which the artists have spent six years collecting stories, observations and memories from Lake Peipsi residents and translating them into visual artistic language.
Scarecrows and critical thinking
In addition to the indoor exhibition, visitors can explore a fascinating collection of scarecrows in the gallery's garden and under the boathouse, created by local residents. The collection includes characters made from fishing nets, samovars and other everyday objects typical of the region, as well as entirely contemporary scarecrows powered by artificial intelligence. Particularly striking is a protest scarecrow with the slogan "Think for yourself", which calls on people to preserve critical thinking and not leave everything to technology.
Opening and gallery background
At the season's festive opening, the Sensational Tartu Spring Band, led by local musician Kristjan Piirimäe, performed. The gallery's activities are organised by Kaili Kask and Raul Oreškin.
Voronja Gallery has operated since 2014 in an old-believer village fisherman's house, where an abandoned boathouse has become a vibrant hub for contemporary art. Each summer, the gallery brings a new exhibition to Lake Peipsi, showcasing both the local cultural scene and broader artistic ideas.
The "Odd People" exhibition is open at Voronja Gallery until 23 August 2026, Friday to Sunday 12-18.
