Waymo has purchased a massive autonomous vehicle test facility in Arizona for $220 million. According to Maricopa County documents, the 5,500-acre property near Wittmann was owned by Delaware-based Route 14 Investment Partners LLC, which is associated with Apple.

The transaction's significance within the autonomous vehicle industry is considerable. Apple had spent years working on its secret car project Project Titan, but abandoned it in 2024. The test facility was likely intended for that project, where Apple had planned to test autonomous vehicles.

Waymo, which is owned by Alphabet, is currently one of the world's leading autonomous taxi service providers and operates actively in multiple US cities. The new test facility in Arizona will give the company an opportunity to expand its operations and test vehicles on an even larger scale. Waymo has been deploying robotaxis in Arizona for years, so the region is well-suited to the company's plans.
