Why Experts Recommend Against Sleeping Naked on Hot Nights

Many people sleep without clothes on hot summer nights, believing it helps them cool down. However, experts warn that this habit can actually worsen sleep quality.

Culture

In summer, when nighttime temperatures refuse to drop, many people search for ways to stay cool in the bedroom. One common solution is sleeping naked – it seems logical that less fabric means more cooling. However, experts say that reality is more complex.

The problem lies in how the body regulates temperature at night. For quality sleep, body temperature needs to drop slightly – and this process occurs partly through the skin, where heat is released. If you sleep naked and without covers, your skin temperature can drop too quickly, which disrupts the natural rhythm of sleep.

Moisture and sweating also play a role. Night sweats are normal, but if the body lacks lightweight clothing that wicks away moisture, it remains on the skin. This in turn can cause fluctuations between feeling cold and hot, which interrupts sleep. Experts recommend preferring light, moisture-absorbing cotton or linen pajamas and breathable bedding.
